Game Preview - 2018 Round 14

By Samuel Lindsay

vs Eastern Suburbs (A)

Southern Districts will be heading to the Woollahra to face the Eastern Suburbs for the second time in 2018 after narrowly edging out the Beasties 35-33 back in Round Six. That result snapped a four game losing streak at the start of the season and after falling to West Harbour last weekend, the Rebels will once again be looking to use the fixture to return to the winners circle. Interestingly enough both team succumbed to defeat last weekend, prior to which they enjoyed four successive victories following defeats in Round Eight. The copycat trend will come to an end this weekend with both teams striving for victory to keep in touch with top six aspirations.

It will be the first time Southern Districts encounter the newly constructed artificial surface at Woollahra, however that hasn’t changed any preparations leading into this weekend’s clash. Southern Districts have managed victories in the last three away fixtures against Easts, and will be hoping to continue the tradition on the new surface. Rohan Saifoloi shapes up to make his long awaited return to first grade, making his first competitive start in 2018 following a medial ligament injury sustained during the trials. Will Thomas was forced to leave the field last weekend with a head knock and will sit out this week; all reports are he will return to action next week. The change opens the door for Bayley Kuenzle to return to top grade following his participation in the World Rugby U20’s Championship guiding Australia to a fifth place finish.

The weekend shapes up as a potentially season defining one for Souths. Victory on Saturday and a favourable result between West Harbour and Eastwood can see Southern Districts jump into the top six. A clash of such significance was fittingly selected as the TV game of the round, with Southern Districts getting air time for the first time in 2018. For all those not heading to Woollahra be sure to tune into 7Two this Saturday. First grade will be kicking-off at 3pm and the first game of the day, fourth grade will get underway at 10:45am.
