Vale Cyril Nethery

Sad news with the passing in late July of Cyril Nethery. Cyril was a former first grade player with St George Rugby, member of North Cronulla Surf Club, the first ever patron of the Burraneer Junior Rugby Club and played Rugby League for the St George. If it were not for a poorly timed broken leg he would have also played for the Wallabies.

Lesser know things about Cyril away from rugby was his work for those less fortunate. He made sacrifices all his life so that many other people could have a better one. He was a world war 2 Lancaster captain with the elite RAF 50 Squadron under Sir Ralph Cochran. 50 squadron specialised in strategic targets of importance. After the war he was involved in flying POWs back to Great Britain from the camps in Europe.

In 1981 he received a Govt grant to study aged care facilities in Japan. In 1985 he received the AM for his services in the interest of aged care and his voluntary work with indigenous people and the St Vincent De Paul society.

Dearly loved husband of Valmarie, loved father and father-in-law of Paul and Carol, Margaret and David Chalker, Michael and Joanne, Christopher, Frances and Matthew May, Lawrence and Joanna.

Grandfather of Aidan and Jane, Caroline and Tony (Chalker); Samantha and Ben, Matthew, Daniel and Jessica, and Felicity; Edward and Lauren, and Claudia; Matthew, Joseph, Patrick and Michael (May). Great grandfather of Alexandra, Will and Jade. Loving brother of Mary Bridges.

Loved friend and helper to many over his long life.
